Trigger 2: Loss aversion asymmetry. You lost $2,000 last week. Your brain is desperate to make it back. So you take a bigger position to recover faster. But bigger positions mean bigger losses when the trade goes against you.

Trigger 3: Overconfidence from knowledge. You studied the setup. You know why it should work. So your confidence outpaces your discipline. You bet bigger because you 'know' it'll work. But knowledge and execution are different skills.

Let me tell you about Jake. He came to me after blowing two funded accounts.

Both times, the same pattern. He'd pass the evaluation with proper sizing. Then he'd get live capital. And within 3 weeks, he'd be oversizing his positions because 'the real money is on the line now.'

His P&L from the first blown account: +$4,200 in week 1, +$1,800 in week 2, -$14,000 in week 3. One trade. 5x his normal position size. The setup was good. The sizing was not.

Here's what we built for Jake. I call it the Position Sizing Discipline Protocol. Three rules:

Rule 1: Pre-market position size lock. Before the market opens, Jake writes down his max position size for the day. Not based on how he feels. Based on his account balance and the 1% rule. Once it's written, it's locked. No changes after the bell.

Rule 2: The '3-winner buffer.' After 3 consecutive winners, Jake's next trade is at HALF size. Not double. This breaks the recency bias loop. Streaks end. Sizing down after wins protects the gains.

Rule 3: The funded account reset. After any loss exceeding 2% of his daily limit, Jake closes the platform for 30 minutes. No exceptions. He does a breathing exercise (I'll show you in a minute), reviews his journal, and only re-enters if the setup still exists.

Jake's results after implementing these 3 rules:

  • Funded account #3: Passed evaluation AND kept the account for 4 months (longest streak)
  • Average position size dropped 40%. Average profit per trade dropped 15%. But total monthly profit increased 60% because he stopped having the big blowup trades.
  • His words: 'I make less per trade but I keep what I make. That's the difference.'

That's Trap #1. You don't need a better strategy. You need a position sizing protocol that works when your emotions are high.

Let me show you Trap #2. This one is worse."


SECTION 3: MENTAL TRAP #2 - REVENGE TRADING [20:00 - 35:00]

"Revenge trading is what happens when you turn a bad day into a catastrophe.

You take a loss. It stings. And instead of walking away, you take another trade immediately. Not because the setup is there. Because you need to win.

The goal stops being 'follow my system.' The goal becomes 'get my money back.'

And that goal will bankrupt you.

Revenge trading is driven by ego. Not greed. There's a difference.

Greed says: 'I want more.' Ego says: 'I refuse to lose.'

When you refuse to accept a loss, your brain enters fight mode. Cortisol spikes. Decision-making deteriorates. Risk tolerance expands. You take trades you'd never take on a normal day.

Here's the pattern:

  1. You take a planned trade. It loses. Normal.
  2. Emotion kicks in. You feel like the market 'owes' you.
  3. You enter a second trade within minutes. No plan. Just impulse.
  4. The second trade loses too. Now you're down 2x.
  5. The spiral accelerates. By end of day, one $500 loss has become a $3,000 loss.

Maria was one of my first mentoring students. She had a 58% win rate. Solid entries. Clean charts.

But once a month, she'd have a revenge trading day that wiped out 2-3 weeks of gains.

Her worst day: Started with a $2,200 loss on a clean setup. Within 4 hours, she had taken 9 more trades. None planned. Total loss: $11,400.

She told me: 'I knew I should stop after the second trade. But I couldn't. It felt like if I stopped, the loss would be real.'

That's the ego trap. Walking away feels like admitting defeat. But staying in the chair when you're emotional is not discipline. It's self-destruction.

Here's the system we built for Maria. The Mental Stop-Loss Protocol:

Step 1: The 10-minute rule. After any loss exceeding your daily risk budget (say 1% of account), close the charts for 10 minutes. Not 2 minutes. Ten. Set a timer. Leave the room if you have to.

During those 10 minutes, do this:

Step 2: The 5-5-5 breathing reset. Breathe in for 5 seconds. Hold for 5 seconds. Breathe out for 5 seconds. Repeat 3 times. This physically lowers cortisol. Your prefrontal cortex (the planning brain) comes back online. Your amygdala (the fight-or-flight brain) calms down.

Step 3: The journal check. Open your trading journal. Write one sentence: 'I lost $X on [trade]. My system told me to [action]. I did [what I actually did].'

Then read yesterday's journal entry. Reading your past notes while emotional creates perspective. You'll see that yesterday you had a winning day. The loss today is normal.

Step 4: The re-entry gate. Before you can trade again, you must answer three questions: - Is there a setup on my watchlist right now? (Not 'will there be one later.' Right now.) - Am I trading this setup to follow my system, or to recover the loss? - If this trade loses, will I be okay with my total daily P&L?

If any answer is 'no,' you're done for the day. Close the platform.

Maria's results after implementing the Mental Stop-Loss Protocol:

  • Revenge trading days dropped from 3-4 per month to zero in month 2
  • Monthly P&L went from -$2,100 average (profitable 19 days, one blowup erasing everything) to +$4,800 average (profitable 19 days, blowup days eliminated)
  • She now trades fewer hours per day but makes more per month
  • Her words: 'The 10-minute rule saved my account. Every time I want to revenge trade, I set the timer. By the time it goes off, the urge is gone.'

That's Trap #2. The revenge trade doesn't recover your loss. It multiplies it.

Now let me show you Trap #3. This one is the most common."


SECTION 4: MENTAL TRAP #3 - NO TRADING PLAN [35:00 - 42:00]

"This trap is sneaky because it doesn't blow up your account in one day. It bleeds you slowly.

No trading plan means entering trades without writing down your entry, exit, position size, and maximum loss before you click buy.

Most traders think they have a plan. They don't. They have an idea. 'I'll buy if it breaks above this level.' That's not a plan. That's a thought.

A plan is written. Specific. Non-negotiable once the market opens.

Without a written plan, every trade becomes a real-time decision. And real-time decisions under pressure are where psychology fails.

You enter early because the candle is moving fast. You exit late because you hope it'll come back. You hold a loser because 'it might reverse.' You cut a winner because you're scared of giving back gains.

Every one of those is a planning failure, not a strategy failure. The strategy would have worked if you'd followed it. But you didn't write it down. So you improvised.

Carlos tracked his trades for 6 weeks before we started working together. 127 trades. 40% win rate. Slightly negative overall.

I asked him: 'How many of these 127 trades had a written plan before entry?'

He said: 'Maybe 30.'

So we tested something. For the next 6 weeks, Carlos only took trades where he wrote the plan first. Entry, target, stop, size, max loss. All written before the market opened.

Results: 89 trades. 65% win rate. Net positive by $6,200.
